While URL’s don’t play a dominant role in Search Engine Optimization, they still have their part. Here are a few things to consider when optimizing your URLs.
-
Keep URLs short: Long URL strings don’t perform as well in search results, and long, messy URLs are less likely to be copied/pasted, linked to, and shared.
-
Use search keywords in your URL. The closer targeted keywords are to your domain, the better.
-
Use a hyphen to separate multiple words unless you’re working with a root domain. Multiple words in a root domain shouldn’t be separated.
And speaking of domains, here’s a word problem: Property A has a community website with a distinct domain name. Property B has a community website that is a sub-domain of the corporate website. Assuming content optimization is similar, which website is ranked higher by Google?
Easy answer: Property A! A fully qualified domain appears more relevant to search engines. Google finds it easier to match main search terms (like a property’s name) with a full domain, making pages easier to rank, and improving page rankings. And higher page rankings translate to more web traffic, which is essentially more leads. And who doesn’t want that?
If your property website doesn’t have a full domain yet, it’s time think about getting one. And if you need some help, just give your Property Solutions account manager a call.
